The history of Caíto Coffee

The brand, Caíto Coffee was originated in Dorado, Puerto Rico. This is its story. Calixto Martorell and Carola Marzán were a couple of liberated slaves brought from Africa who settled with the landowners of the Martorell Family. This family who possessed high financial power lived in Dorado and where owners of the majority of the lands in the Northern Region of Puerto Rico.

At the end of the 1800s, this Afro-American matrimony who inherited the name of their master had a total of five children. Three daughters; Julia, Pilar, and Agustina Martorell (aka “Magu”) worked spreading fertilizers on the sugar cane farms in the flatlands of El Dorado. Sugar canes were processed in the Constancia Sugar Mill.

Dorado has never had good soil to grow coffee. However, it was one of the major zones that produced sugar. Calixto was a popular figure in his town. Stories are told that every child that he met he would call them “Caíto”. For this reason, it was popular to call his kids “Caíto’s Children”. Another theory is based on the derivative of the name Calixto.

The first idea is accepted as the most truthful.

In honor of the numerous families of hard-working men and women, a member of the fourth generation in succession, Andrés Waldemar Volmar, wants to pay tribute to the memory of his ancestors using the nickname as the brand of a 100% Puerto Rican Coffee. The logo embodies its history. The town’s map and the lines represent the cultivation of the Sugar Cane. The three leaves symbolize the humble women who sowed the fertilizers on their farms: Magu, Julia and Pilar. The two coffee grains are Calixto and Carola who are the main characters of this story.
